What is CNC Milling?

CNC Milling is a subtractive manufacturing process that uses rotating cutting tools to remove material from a solid workpiece under computer control. The machine follows precise digital instructions (G-code) to shape the workpiece into a finished part.

In  one word:  A spinning cutting tool moves across a block of material, carving away unwanted areas to create the desired shape.

What’s advantages of CNC Milling?

Unmatched Precision & Accuracy

Consistently holds tight tolerances (±0.001" / ±0.025mm), ensuring every part is identical. critical for aerospace, medical, and electronics.

Complex Geometries & High Repeatability

Easily produces intricate 3D shapes, curved surfaces, deep cavities, and complex angles. Once programmed, it delivers thousands of identical parts with virtually no variation.

Excellent Material Versatility

Works with a wide range of materials: metals (aluminum, steel, titanium, Inconel), plastics (ABS, Nylon, PEEK, Polycarbonate), and composites (carbon fiber, fiberglass).

High Productivity & Efficiency

Runs 24/7 with minimal supervision. Automatic tool changers (ATCs) swap tools in seconds, and overnight operation boosts output without added labor costs.

Superior Surface Finish

Achieves very smooth finishes directly from the machine, reducing or eliminating secondary polishing or sanding, saving time and money.

Fast Turnaround Times

Excellent for rapid prototyping and small-batch production, delivering functional parts within days via optimized toolpaths, multi-axis machines, and minimal manual intervention.

4 axies cnc machining
5 axies cnc machining cnc milling cnc machining

3-Axis CNC Milling

Motion Method: The workpiece moves along three linear axes: X, Y, and Z. The cutting tool can move up/down, left/right, and forward/backward, but the tool’s axis orientation is always vertical or horizontal and cannot tilt.

Characteristics: Simple structure, easy programming and operation, high machining efficiency, and the lowest cost among all CNC machines.

Limitations: Cannot machine parts with complex curved surfaces, undercuts, or deep side grooves. For example, a 3-axis machine cannot machine an angled hole inside a solid block.

Typical Parts: Flat surfaces, straight walls, simple cavities, such as most plate-type, block-type, and disc-type parts (e.g., mold plates, machine bases).

4-Axis CNC Milling

This adds one rotary axis to the 3-axis configuration, typically called the A-axis (rotating around the X-axis).

Motion Method: In addition to the X, Y, Z linear movements, the workpiece or tool can rotate around one axis (usually a horizontal axis).

Characteristics: Can machine features around the circumference of a workpiece, such as drilling holes on a cylindrical surface or milling helical grooves. It can machine multiple faces (e.g., the front and side of a part) in a single setup, reducing the number of clamping operations and improving accuracy and efficiency.

Typical Parts: Cams, propellers, helical grooves, keyways and holes on shaft-type parts, and simple box parts requiring machining on multiple faces.

5-Axis CNC Milling

Based on the type of rotary axes, it comes in various configurations .

Motion Method: In addition to X, Y, Z linear movements, the cutting tool or workpiece can freely rotate and tilt in two directions. This allows the tool to approach the workpiece from virtually any angle.

Characteristics: Complete Machining in One Setup,

Machines Extremely Complex Shapes, Improved Machining Quality with Short Tools.

Typical Parts: Impellers and blades for aircraft engines, medical implants (e.g., artificial joints), complex mold cores, and other parts with complex geometries.
