What is CNC Turning?

CNC Turning is a subtractive manufacturing process where a cylindrical workpiece rotates at high speed while a stationary cutting tool moves linearly to remove material and create the desired shape.

In one word: CNC turning is a machining process that creates round parts by spinning the workpiece against a stationary cutting tool, offering high precision, excellent surface finish, and fast production speeds for cylindrical components.

Extremely Fast for Round Parts

The fastest way to machine cylindrical parts. High RPM spinning combined with linear single-point cutting makes material removal highly efficient, significantly faster than milling for pins, shafts, bushings, and discs.

Excellent Concentricity & Roundness

Because the part rotates on its own axis, all features are naturally centered. Perfect concentricity between diameters, faces, and bores is easily achieved, whereas a mill would require complex 4/5-axis workholding for the same result.

Ideal for Symmetrical Parts

The go-to process for rotationally symmetric parts such as shafts, bolts, bushings, pulleys, discs, flanges, and nozzles. If you can draw a centerline through the part, turning is almost always the best choice.

Holds extremely tight tolerances (typically ±0.0005 inches / ±0.0127mm) thanks to precise tool control, rigid workholding (chuck + tailstock), and minimal tool deflection. Perfect for press-fit shafts, bearing seats, and sealing surfaces.

The continuous cutting action produces a smooth, swirling finish on outside and inside diameters. Parts often achieve a near-mirror finish directly from the lathe, reducing or eliminating the need for grinding or polishing.
